@adastrasalem I would never suggest not going out and certainly outerwear is important. I’m not sure you have to dress a kid to go out for a socially distanced walk, but that’s up to you! But I have tons of clothes that we bought that were money wasted between not going out for the first three months and then staying at home because of the pandemic ever since. If I could do it over, I would have bought fewer going out outfits.
@jerryklasic What's the difference between a "going out outfit" and a "staying home" outfit? It's not like people are putting their babies in suits and cocktail dresses.
Other than the need for short vs long sleeves, and pants vs no pants, depending on weather/sun. And an extra sweater layer or something.
@haruchi Going out outfits are regular clothes. Staying home outfit is a pajama/sleep n’ play type thing. So in the post you’re responding to, I was saying that I would have bought fewer regular clothes and more sleep n plays because we haven’t gone out much.
@jerryklasic Haha this reminds me about how my mom would laugh at me when I talked about how I didn't get my baby dressed. Now that I'm on my second kid, he spent nearly his whole life so far (11 months) wearing sleepers. Didn't matter where we went, just so much easier, and he's a baby! Now he's starting to walk around and stuff, so I feel like I should get him dressed, but a month ago when we got together with people, he was in pjs!
@lee1009 After 6 months, I only just started getting my baby dressed somewhat regularly, just cause I figure we are in this social distancing thing for the long haul so maybe I need to be better with a routine. But that’s really more about me and my mental health than genuinely caring about what the baby wears. Plus I have all these hand-me-downs and feel like they should see the light of day. But in my heart, I’m all about the sleepers all day.
@jerryklasic I had all gender neutral newborn but pretty girly stuff afterwards. I just had a boy, so newborn stuff is great but he’s still got some rather girly pyjamas. I wish I’d got more gender neutral t shirts etc for later
@ko9killer Pink yes but I’m not sure I want my son dressed in a dress with butterflies on or overly girly clothes, I personally think that’s a bit much.
@jerryklasic Some things get so worn so it’s no big deal. Once they get to a year old I’ve found the growth spurts slow down. I still buy my daughter girls stuff but she’s a t shirt/leggings combo kind of girl because it’s practical, some neutral t shirts might of been a more sensible idea but the plain ones still have a frilly bottom.
@diaryofasuperchamp Agreed, my toddler wears out clothes before she outgrows them, and her brother is catching up to her in size (she's small/average size, he's big, it's funny). So after 18 months sized clothes, I pick just random stuff.
@jerryklasic I agree with everything but the first point, it depends on the baby. My son has oboy just grown out of preemie clothes and he was born at 38+1, still doesn't quite fit newborn yet.
He was born 5lbs 13oz and I was not prepared to have nothing that would fit him, even SCBU had only one or two outfits that would fit him well.
All I would suggest is save the tags and reciepts on anything smaller than 0-3 months, that way you can at least try and return them.
@jerryklasic I’d say buy the least amount of NB clothing. Because they could be born too big for it, or they can wear it until 2 months. Buy NB as needed after baby is born, but be ready with some NB and 0-3. My boy was born 7lbs, and he fit into his NB clothes until about 2-2.5 months old. Now he’s 3.5 months old and his 0-3 are starting to get snug.
@jerryklasic I dress my kid in both genders clothing. Strangers react differently to her depending on what gender they think she is. As a boy the say she looks strong and as a girl they say she looks cute. I wonder what unconscious things people do when she's dressed as a boy vs a girl even if they know her gender?
@jerryklasic Second buying gender neutral. All the stuff I bought was neutral, but we still have so much girly stuff because people (ahem, Grandma and Nana) love buying cute baby clothes and we got some girly hand-me-downs. Even if you buy neutral, you'll end up with plenty of gendered clothes.
@jerryklasic I just asked my paediatrician what size my son would be when born and what clothes to buy. She says newborn clothes for the first 2 weeks then 0-3 months.
Weirdly, my baby was wearing 3-6 months then hit 6 months and his clothes were getting tight. Pulled out some of the brand new 6-12 months and they are too small!!
Basically, there’s not a lot of consistency in sizes.
Not all his clothes fit & now it’s a pandemic I’m washing the same two zipper onesies over and over while I wait for a delivery
There’s nothing in the shops in my city in his size.
The other day I cut off the arms of one of his body suits so he could wear an extra layer but not get too overheated as I ran out of t-shirts
Everything is made in China and I’m waiting for the shops to be re-stocked.
