@lcr0111 My DD's bit the dust about 3 weeks ago by means of being submerged in the bath tub when I stupidly tried using it as a way to get her to tip her head back to rinse out her hair...I hope you didn't make the same mistake I did by ordering a cheap knock off. BIG mistake. For one, the thing sucked. It was super slow, the volume wasn't loud enough, & it didn't fit in the case right - which, I should've known. But what's more - DD knew how to use the old one. Even though I quickly ordered an exact replacement, it's like she doesn't believe me that it's not the shitty one & doesn't want it now - she wants Daddy's, that she knows how to use. Ughhh!!! My bad on trying to pass off the shitty one, but I made it right - it's the exact same, I promise!!!

@lcr0111 We are on tabby number 2. First one broke after 2 weeks because kiddo had a tantrum BEFORE the 8 hour flight home and it fell on a seatbuckle. Second one got stepped on by hubby because toddler left it on the floor. 1000% expected. Fortunately this time I could tape the screen and it's still mostly functioning! I will buy 10 more tabbies if it means there are some times I am not being crawled on.

I left it sitting on the hood top so some task at the ice cream place, where my kids run around playing in the field for 20 minutes. (burns off that ice cream high)
Pull out onto the 6 lane road at and accelerate to 45, and watch it fly off the car and dust into pieces.
My husband played fogger to retrieve it. The case broke, it came out of the case, which was what I saw, and the front black frame part is super scratched. But it works fine. Lol. The screen is abs exactly the same.
I couldn't believe it.
So, all I can s is that someone might find it and have a perfectly kindle.
Maybe it'll make their entire year. (doesn't take much in 2020)

@lcr0111 What age do yall think a tablet is appropriate? My stepkids have had them since they were 2 which I as a childless stepparent found atrocious. Now as a stepparent with my own bio child I find it a little more understandable....but still too early for me personally. But I'm not sure what age is actually a good idea?
@thewarminghouse Whew you're asking the wrong person. I got my kiddo one at like 8 months. She's a really tough customer and it comes out when I need a break, or in the car. She's 16 months now and we only watch shows like little baby bum and super simple songs, but shes learning new words and singing along to songs.
I would say if your kid is doing perfectly fine without one, wait a little longer. I feel like tablets are "wits end" purchases.

@thewarminghouse Wow! That's insane. Honestly, kid probably (hopefully) won't remember it. You're not in too deep like I am. When you inevitably get the tablet, just set boundaries. I usually do it during car rides and when I need coffee, and when she's super grouchy, and only educational shows. Wishing you luck and remember, DONT LEAVE IT ON THE ROOF OF THE CAR!!!!
@thewarminghouse We got one right before our toddler turned 3. We have family 500 miles away that we visit a few times a year so we save it for car trips. I would LOVE to use it more than that but toddler has more tantrums around electronics.

@thewarminghouse Every kid is different. My now 3 year old has had devices to use since she was pretty young, never with unlimited access though. She got her very own brand new Kindle Fire for Kids for her 3rd birthday and she mostly reads on it, with a few games and videos very occasionally. She's had a few devices to use over the years bc we traveled extensively with her and it was just necessary for all the flights we took. Her brother is 1, has absolutely no interest in watching anything or sitting still and we haven't been able to travel (thanks, pandemic!), so I can't imagine giving him a device ever anyway. Also he's super rough with everything and throws...

@thewarminghouse We got ours for our toddler at around 1.5 years, specifically because we were going on a several hour long plane ride. To be honest though, I used to let him watch shows and play games on my phone before that. We have kind of an Open Screen Time policy though - he can watch or play things (almost) whenever he wants, so it's not a special thing that he's glued to when it's on. He generally likes being outside more, and often ignores the show after watching it for a couple minutes. He's a VERY active kid though, so it works for him. All kids are different.
I also feel like I should mention that he has learned SO MUCH from his shows. The other day he saw a blinking light in the sky and said "it's a satellite!" Which he learned about from tv. We also watch with him, so we can talk about the things they're learning on the show ("look a caterpillar, just like in Puffin Rock! Do you remember what a caterpillar turns into?" Etc)
TL,DR: I'm very pro screen time, provided they watch education shows and games, but all kids are different so you do you.

@sasaresasa This is my parenting strategy too! The mom guilt is real but the kid's well behaved, given the choice will always choose something other than TV/tablet, and has learned a ton. She's 5 and I have no intentions on limiting screen time yet.
@thewarminghouse I'm holding off as long as possible, for two reasons, 1) I don't want to be come dependent on it , I have a lot of mom guilt as it is, and I don't want to add to it, and 2) ToddlerMermaid is too smart for her own good, she remember things we did ONCE, I know it wouldn't be a "just xyz" time, she would lose her effing mind all the time, and I don't want to do that to her.
I considered getting her a baby fire tablet for her 3rd birthday and have decided against it. I'm very fortunate that she loves car rides, and is generally easy to please, and she's an only child, basically (her brother is 23 years older).
People would roast me like a marshmallow if I told you what the age I'm considering it is. However, while that age is "high", I won't have issue with her using a laptop/computer before then, the 100% mobility of a tablet/touch screen is what the big issue is for me, which is why I want her to be older.
