My 5-y/o daughter "well, actually"d me
My 5-year-old daughter came down the stairs wearing her unicorn-print pants.
"Hey, nice unicorn pants!" I told her.
"Actually, Daddy," she said, "they have wings. So they're not
unicorns , they're
alicorns ."
I'd thought I had a couple more years until she reached this level of know-it-all smugness!
@concernedcatholic Today I learned alicorns are a thing. Always assumed they were included in Pegasus.
@christfollower13 A pegasus is a horse with wings. An alicorn is a unicorn with wings. Two different things. I know this because my daughter had a My Little Pony obsession for awhile
@zimikurot1221 Depending on how "well, actually" you want to be, Pegasus is a particular winged horse whose name was co-opted into the name for all winged horses.
@ant101 It's kind of like how everyone refers to facial tissue as "kleenex" even though that's a specific brand.
@christfollower13 I have also just learned this as well. And I have teenaged daughter! How could I not know. I'm a failure.
@edmomd And regular ponies are now called 'earth ponies'
@edmomd I have so many questions about why your handle is EmulsionMan
@christfollower13 Technically, Pegasus was
a winged horse, not the name of all winged horses.
It'd be like calling all dogs Lassie, because one dog was named Lassie.
@concernedcatholic Is your daughter my daughter? At this point I’m convinced My Little Pony exists so our kids can explain to us we don’t know shit about unicorns or alicorns or anything.
@banon6983 Mine does the same. I have now been thoroughly educated in the differences of unicorns, pegasi, and alicorns.
@richam Alicorn is the Latin word for the horn of a unicorn, according to Wikipedia.
My Little Pony popularized calling winged unicorns “alicorns” to differentiate them from non-winged unicorns and winged non-unicorns (pegasus).
@banon6983 Thank you.
However, I’m going with Pegacorn.
Or possibly, Unisus.
