Started prenatals and it’s messed up my period

Is this a thing? Since I started taking prenatals 2 months ago, both cycles since then have been out of whack.

Usually my cycles are 26 days and 5-6 days of bleeding starting with spotting.

I’m now day 20 of my cycle and have been spotting since yesterday. The same happened last cycle, my spotting started on day 20 instead of day 26… the only thing I can think that has changed this would be the prenatals? Could they be the cause?

I’m taking the Elevit prenatals once a day, I haven’t been able to find anything else about them affecting cycles so I have no idea what’s happening. We will be TTC in 5 months and I’m nervous that this has messed up my cycle and now I have no idea when I’m ovulating!!

@ja1717 They’re just vitamins so no they shouldn’t but you have time to try Swirching to another brand or just switching to folic acid supplements to see

@1astrokid1 thank you, that’s exactly what I was thinking but it’s the only thing I’ve changed in the past two months that I thought could be causing this to happen with my cycles 😬 will have a look into other brands

@ja1717 My first 2 months taking prenatals shortened my super regular cycle by 4 days. I had the same suspicion as you, so I stopped them and my cycle went back to it's regular length.

I'm ordering a new brand to try now, but it certainly made me nervous.

@sameoldme oh wow interesting! thank you for sharing this, I thought it would be really weird coincidence to not be from the prenatals when that’s the only thing that’s changed in my routine… I might give it another month and if it’s still weird I’ll stop them or go to the doc!

@ja1717 Full spectrum birth worker here :) Prenatals shouldn’t impact your cycle in any way. However, other factors could be at play, like a rise in cortisol as you anticipate staring to TTC. This is the stress hormone and unfortunately our bodies don’t do a wonderful job differentiating between excitement versus fight/flight/freeze.

I would recommend going for a pre TTC doctor’s appointment to cross those T’s and begin to do things to naturally increase oxytocin as you prepare for the new season of life. Movement that makes you feel grounded, hypnobirth exercises, breathe work, etc. Practice makes perfect so by the time you are TTC, or even pregnant (!!), you’ll feel more settled.

@cruise Wow thank you for your insight and taking the time to comment! I have done an appointment with my doctor for pre-conception blood tests etc but I might go back since this is happening just to get to the bottom of it and have everything sorted as you said. I’ve always suffered from anxiety and stressed and have never had it affect my period but maybe it’s because it’s to do with a whole new world of unknown things! Thank you :)

@ja1717 I just started taking prenatals at the beginning of December when I started my period. My period has been starting on the 1st of each month for the past 6 months... January was a week late. Was hoping to TTC next month so we'll see what happens 😅 on some of the bottles of prenatals I was reading it did say that it may throw off your cycle, but everything I've read is that it shouldn't affect it. 🤷 Maybe just coincidence but that's the only thing that I changed this month lol

@russellmanofgod That’s so interesting that is exactly the same as me! I’m doing one more month to see if it evens out and if not I’ll try a different prenatal. I checked the side effects for the one I’m taking and it didn’t mention anything about messing up your cycle, premature bleeding etc so I have no idea. It’s just a very strange coincidence that my cycle has been consistent for at least 10 months and the month i start prenatals it goes all wacky!

@ja1717 Yes this can totally happen. I was taking too many vitamins and it messed up my cycle, delayed ovulation and even elevated my tsh to levels that are not ideal for conception. I didn’t know this until I spoke to a fertility specialist. Stopped taking the vitamins and retested again 3 weeks later. Everything went back to normal once I stopped. Be careful what you take! Good thing I figured out the issue before it made things worse.

@ja1717 My cycles were 28 days and 5 days of bleeding since 18 years old, and now I'm 28. Last month I started to take prenatal one per day, and my AF came 8 days earlier, with 7 days of bleeding and has not stopped yet.

@guotao So similar. Mine usually comes 30 to 40 days (they’ve started getting longer in the last couple years but never in my LIFE early). Took a methyl folate sublingual supplement for a couple days (like 3 days) and weird spotting at 22 days! Not my normal colors and not enough to fill even a liner and I usually bleed heavy.
I’m 9 days into this bleeding now.
That little pill was the only thing I changed.

@colodeck I stopped taking prenatal vitamins the day I posted this comment and I stopped spotting almost immediately. I did not take any prenatal supplements in this new cycle and my cycle got back normal now. Pretty weird.

@guotao Thank god lol I’m over here thinkin the whole shootin match is infected or we’re somehow pregnant or something and there’s not even a chance at normal here😅🙃🥲 why do bodies have to body like this?
I booked an appt with my gyno next month to be safe but hopefully nothin

@colodeck Me too. It made me feel I was pregnant cause I know there would be implication bleeding. Also I spotted during ovulation last cycle 🤷 seems like the prenatal made me spotting from beginning to end last month

@ja1717 I started taking the prenatal brand baby and me 2 two months ago. Last month I started spotting at day 26 and got my flow at day 30. This month I started at day 21! I usually have a 28-29 day cycle and sometimes my period is a little later when I’m highly stressed but it has never came early and I have never spotted in my life. Going to stop taking the prenatal and see.
