@iamstefanie Great info! I think she just means 40 weeks gestation - so if she deliveres at 37 weeks, she's asking if she should wait 3 weeks. The answer is a resounding "no".
@joannayang Hep B vaccine as an early life priority was a product of the culture 80s and 90s as much as a clear medical indication that infants born to uninfected parents are at risk of Hep B.
To be honest, the eye antibiotics are the same way, if you are tested and not at risk of STI, your baby is unlikely to need antibiotics. That practice stems from pre-standard screening and widespread blindness from gonorrhea.
@joben The other interesting thing my pediatrician said is the 24 hour old shot is actually an “extra dose”. We opted out of it and first shot was at 2 months. Pediatrician said he’s still on schedule so no actual delayed scheduled .
@joannayang In my province children don’t get the Hep B vaccine until grade 7 when they are administered at school. Here’s the Ontario doc that recommends who gets which Hep B shot and when. Not all jurisdictions reccomend hep B at birth for low risk infants.
@joannayang So, we waited till first round of shots for the hep b, even though didn’t necessarily request that, he just didn’t get it at the hospital.
I did ask to have the vitamin k and eye ointment delayed until after the “golden hour” bc I didn’t like the idea of a shot and him not being able to see anything immediately after birth. So he got to spend time with mommy, daddy, and brother before those. The AAP actually recommends that is ok to delay these until after the first feeding. Just food for thought! https://sph.unc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/112/2019/08/CGBI-4-Eyes-and-Thighs-2019.pdf
@catlou No, they can’t see very well but why make it worse? The doctors had zero issues with putting it off for an hour after birth. Being born already seems like sensory overload. Why add stressors to that immediately? Especially when there are no contraindications so long as they are given within 6 hours of birth? Breastfeeding was very important to us. Many mothers/babies have difficulty with the first latch/feeding, so it made sense to us to remove the external stressors.
