When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@allaloneuk Water is ok. You might want to cut it for potty training purposes (less water = less accidents), but it won't affect his teeth much.

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@katrina2017 From the AAPD guideline on infant oral health: "In children considered at moderate or high caries risk under the age of two, a ‘smear’ of fluoridated toothpaste should be used. In all children ages two to five, a ‘pea-size’ amount should be used."...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@katrina2017 Yes, any fluoride toothpaste will be good, but just use a scrape for now. When she can spit it out you can graduate to a pea size. There is a picture in the main post showing how much to put on the brush.

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@troubledneighbor Probably both. A quick exam and a cleaning, generally with a toothbrush. Then they'll put on the fluoride varnish.

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@troubledneighbor At 16 mo I would do a knee lap exam. You would hold your son in your lap, and lay him down into mine. He will probably scream, but his mouth would be open and allow for the exam. Really a few minutes is all that would be needed to make an assessment. This is the basic idea We...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@swilson1 You should start brushing at least once a day. You could use a tiny scrape of toothpaste, or even just wet the brush with water. Continue to wipe out the mouth after feedings.

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@iamjezreel If you are concerned about weight gain and want to continue the night time feeding, at least wipe out the mouth after feedings. Spiffies may be a great option for you. They are sweetened with xylitol, which can not be metabolized by s. mutans and actually shows reduction of bacteria...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@fatherhood Sedation is safe when practiced appropriately. And a note about the restraint: In most cases I don't use it. Most kids can be tolerate quick procedures, even the really little ones. Many times I will only use the slowspeed drill to remove decay as it is easier to tolerate, and skip...

@debranch I'm glad it helped. And that your little one will be receiving treatment. Don't feel bad. Oral health information gets overlooked and is usually hard to come by unless you specifically search it out. You're on the right track now, and your daughter will be fine. Cavities can be filled...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@cat7 Sure. This relationship exists due to a couple of factors: When babies are born, the do not have the bacteria that cause cavities (mainly strep. mutans) in their mouths. We get those bacteria from our environment, and mostly from those who interact with us. Anyone who comes in very...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@katrina2017 That is a good start. Before long though, get in the habit of doing it after each feeding. When we are born our mouths are sterile. Over time we get bacteria from our surroundings and those we are in close contact with. In most cases, this means from our mothers. There is a strong...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@katrina2017 Really you could start any time. It is more important when the teeth start to erupt, but it wouldn't hurt to get in the habit of doing it. Wipe with a damp cloth or gauze. As she gets older you could try something like this: http://www.spiffies.com/category-s/81.htm But those are...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@bobobobobobobobob The least invasive treatment isn't always the best treatment, or the least expensive. The biggest problem in dentistry right now is that corporations are taking over the profession. They hire dentists and put them in practices that are too busy to provide quality care. They...

When should my child see a dentist? And other FAQs

@bobobobobobobobob I can understand that. Here's the first thing: Ask any 5 dentists to treatment plan a case, and you'll get 5 different treatment plans. Some providers are more aggressive with treatment plans, and others will prefer to "watch and wait." As I've been on reddit (r/Dentistry)...
