Why should I not let my baby “use me as a human pacifier”

@andybrooks Yup. It’s a lifestyle choice, not a health choice. Negatives Mom gets fewer breaks from comforting baby It can be overstimulating for mom Positives Mom always has a way to comfort baby No need to buy or sterilize pacifiers I’m a huge fan of “Do what works until it doesn’t, then...

When will Americans finally not care that I cosleep?

@i_believe A year seems to be when the social stigma lifts. Toddlers 1-2 years old can free themselves if trapped, are allowed to have blankets and pillows, and the SIDS risk drastically drops.

@warriorforchrist We use the Cerave ointment, which is like fancy Vaseline.

    Subreddit after r/newborns?

    @annap16 /r/newborns, then /r/newparents, then the joy that is /r/toddlers. You’ll also want /r/foodbutforbabies

    Best Hygiene Products for Newborns

@margstone It’s early/tentative research, so the only places you can learn more are in the abstracts of the big allergy conferences. I’m lucky in that our allergy team is really good at giving me homework and updating me on current findings. Common additives that cause contact dermatitis in...

    Best Hygiene Products for Newborns

@ksenija CMPI is a different mechanism than IgE-mediated dairy allergy (classic allergies that can be anaphylactic), and also different than lactose intolerance. I don’t know much about intolerances, sensitivities, or the various syndromes like CMPI or FPIES, so I have no idea what the risk...

@computergal If baby’s doctor approves, starting allergy introduction as early as 4 months old increases likelihood of not developing allergies. Avoid sparkle agents in dishwasher detergents. The evidence is thin so it’s a “better safe than sorry” situation. If baby has eczema, clear it up...

    Best Hygiene Products for Newborns

@computergal Yes, your baby is high risk for developing allergies, so I would be very careful about topical food oils. You can always wash prior to nursing, although that’s tough in the clusterfeeding newborn days. I ended up not using any nipple creams at all, although I did Vaseline a few...

    Best Hygiene Products for Newborns

@innocentguy12 I had mango in whatever EarthMama product I was using, but it was 3 years ago so i have no idea what the ingredients are now. I just remember struggling to find baby-friendly toiletries that didn’t have nuts, coconut, milk, eggs, wheat, or oats.

    Would You Rather: House Addition

@kimrossie Sounds like the choice is if you want walkability or chickens! The two are rarely compatible: to have a yard big enough for chickens, you’ll be in a more suburban space that doesn’t have coffee shops (even if it might have sidewalks)

@innocentguy12 Here’s a press release from one of the first big papers that linked skin contact with peanut to peanut allergies. Use it to get to the actual paper (sorry, shit internet at the moment). The current research should be pretty easy breadcrumbs forward as they’ll reference it. I...

    Would You Rather: House Addition

@kimrossie I’m in shock that $500k is expensive and 1100sf with a yard is small! 😆 My HCOL area has totally warped my perspective. Both are good options, it just depends on your priorities and desired lifestyle. Think about if this is a for-now home, for-kids home, or forever home. If it’s for...

    Best Hygiene Products for Newborns

@pandabear84 I got the lessons from my toddler’s allergy doctor and again from his dermatologist, so I don’t have specific papers in mind. You can certainly learn more from Food Allergy Canada; they have a few archived webinars on allergies in babies that get into it.

    Best Hygiene Products for Newborns

@computergal Does baby have a family history of allergies, eczema, or asthma? If so, I highly suggest more processed toiletries like Cerave are a safer choice than more plant-based toiletries like Earth Mama. Current food allergy research suggests that foods in broken skin (like coconut oil on...

Help me pull the trigger: Wildbird Aerial | Sakura Bloom Scout | LennyLight | Tula Lite

@dominga I love my LennyLight. I think you can find a few of my reviews of it on this group but misspelled LennyLite. I carry my 20lb baby for hours a day chasing toddler without discomfort. He pretty much does all his naps in his carriermuch! 😬 I live in the Pacific Northwest, so can’t speak...

    Home air quality priorities?

@orthodoxjay1 My priorities would be: Replace range. Gas stoves are a huge ongoing source of crap indoor air quality. Then: Air purifiers. It’ll be an ongoing mitigation for anything and everything from illness to pollen to smoke. Then: Upgrade range to vent outside.
