Don't be discouraged by all the rosy posts on this sub

@lesnock It's always good to have realistic expectations, so parents don't think that allowing your kid to cry for 2 hours at bedtime for 3 nights will magically lead to sleeping through the night forever and ever =) I thought that before and the reality is MUCH more complicated. When you have...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@stageandgrace I did bedtime 1-1.5 hours earlier on early bedtime days (we went by cues a bit). You're right that you don't want to shift bedtime too early all the time. I found that early bedtime 2-3 times a week was fine. When we shifted to 1-nap completely we moved bedtime up by about 30min...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@stageandgrace You're getting super close. At this point some people just go for it, whereas I personally held out for a day when he woke up so early (like 5) that he actually fell back asleep before DWT (make sure room is super dark in the morning). I wouldn't worry about crutch at this point...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@stageandgrace Re starting WW2, this really depends on your kid. My son has always had a shorter WW1 and long WW2, so our starter was like 4.5/5.5. But he was able to tolerate 6+ hours no problem at that point—I just knew it wasn’t a good idea. I think the key is total wake time. My son’s sleep...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@stageandgrace Thanks for the kind words! Pretty common for total sleep to drop less than kiddo’s actual sleep requirement leading up to a nap transition. The sleep debt basically builds up until kiddo has night sleep disruptions (typically early morning waking), then you start the transition...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@qurious4christ You can do either. If you do decide to sleep train (we did that), then it is possible that he wakes up at 6 and doesn't go back to sleep by your DWT of 7. You have two options there: 1) go in a bit before DWT and rock kiddo back to sleep for 15-30min, so you can make it to your...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@qurious4christ Generally it’ll be better if you can get 3 long naps and make it to usual bedtime. That’s not always possible so just do w what feels right to you at the time. Just don’t let bedtime get pushed later by the 4th nap, if you end up using it. Keeping kid up until first nap time by...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@qurious4christ Nap fighting. “Undertired” doesn’t cause EMWs. EMWs are super common this age developmentally. As long as bedtime is appropriate you just deal w EMWs and move on.

Sleep issues b/c of our small house

@secundus Is the issue because older sister needs the room during her 2nd nap time? Anywhere else you can put her? Your own bedroom? A closet? A bathroom? Get a slumberpod for the living room packnplay? Can the older sister play or do quiet time in a different room and give the little one the...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@qurious4christ 3 nap schedule sounds good. If you're still getting night wakings then stop capping the third nap and see how short last WW wants to get. Pretty common for WWs to shrink when kiddo has a lot of sleep debt. They'll get longer when kiddo is caught up on sleep. Whenever you think...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@qurious4christ I did make it, but there was a formatting error and when I corrected it I lost it. Honestly I'm just gonna do it on Substack bc I just don't trust Reddit anymore. Re: 4-3, honestly I think the easiest is to go with the flow. Your current bedtime and DWT all sound good. The key...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@anavah In that case just flip flop until she settles out =) Sounds like y'all are doing well. Re: night lengthening, my son was like yours before he hit 1yo (longest night was 11.5 hours and gravitated towards 10.5-11 hours, very prone to early morning wakings which drove me nuts), but after...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@anavah I put my kiddo down at 3 hours after the first nap and leave him in the crib for the full hour. If he doesn't take it, we move on and bring bedtime up. I find the key is to put him down early (hence why I do 3 hours WW2). The later you put him down the more likely he ends up in the wake...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@anavah Yes, never cal nap right after a nap transition—you need it long to make up for the sleep debt and avoid early bedtime. I’d try for 1 nap still, but bring nap up to 1030-11 and see what happens. If you get a monster nap do early bedtime. If nap isn’t long enough do a bridging micro nsp.

How do deal with limits of OPOL for a non native speaker?

@rodan I see a lot of not-perfectly-fluent Mandarin heritage speakers where I live (Northern California)! I think just in trying to stick to OPOL (even if you're having to substitute English for words you don't really know) you are already way ahead of the curve. From what I've observed, most...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@anavah Sounds like y’all are doing great w the 1130 nap. I’d just stop waking her—the long nap is her own body’s way of catching up on the sleep debt (which is what’s causing the overnight restlessness). You’ll know she’s caught up when she stops passing out at bedtime quickly.

How do deal with limits of OPOL for a non native speaker?

@fireblaze I'm a pretty good Mandarin-speaker but boy I hear you re: the names of construction vehicles and dinosaurs! I never knew their names in English or Mandarin until my son hit that age... I started making up names to be honest. He can correct me when he figures it out later =P If OPOL...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@davidkampisch My son gravitated towards 10.5 hour nights before too. His natural equilibrium is still 11 but since he hit 1 he could do 12 hours 1-2 times a week if sleep pressure is really high. So definitely stick to the system that I suggested. It's great that he can do 2 hours on the nap...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@davidkampisch I see. He should be ready for 1 nap then. I think you guys just went crazy with the wake windows. He seems to be high sleep needs w 14.5 hours of sleep based on his 2 nap schedule, so that’s 9.5 hours of TWT max. They build up a sleep debt going into the transition so a beginner...

The March to 1 Nap: A Practical Guide to Baby Nap Transitions (4m-18m-ish)

@davidkampisch Interesting. So he was on 3 naps up until 14 months? This is a pretty late time to transition to 2 naps, and suggests that he may not be ready to transition to 1 nap until close to 2. Your priority is therefore to get him back on his old schedule.
