    Teething "fever"

@cjmnksa I was told that it’s coincidental that kids often get sick when they’re teething. One pediatrician said it might be a connection between getting sick and them putting their hands in their mouth more, or just chewing on stuff more in general, to try and soothe their gums.

How are some bassinet style sleepers with 'soft mattresses' considered safe?

@brendang You can just Google it. You can also contact the manufacturer directly to get them to send you a copy, but it’s probably on their website. Check the ASTM label for the date it was made and make sure the manual you find online is from that model.

What happens to poor sleepers who aren’t sleep trained?

@ebveloz Anecdotal: my husband was never sleep trained, and coslept until he was 5 because that was the only way they could get him to sleep. He’s now a great sleeper who falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. Also anecdotal: I wasn’t sleep trained, never coslept, and I’m an awful...

How are some bassinet style sleepers with 'soft mattresses' considered safe?

@brendang Check the bassinet manual to see if adding a mattress is allowed. Most bassinets and PNPs say to only use the one they provide. I highly recommend that FB group from my comment. They have tons of info on how to check if your product meets current standards.

How are some bassinet style sleepers with 'soft mattresses' considered safe?

@crash1 Join the FB group Safe Sleep and Baby Care—Evidence-Based Support for help determining whether all your sleep spaces are up to current standards. They should all have a label on them with the ASTM standard, and you can check to ensure that’s the current one and not something outdated...

Why should I not let my baby “use me as a human pacifier”

@yoshinat0r Sleep associations like this are only a problem when they are a problem for YOU. There’s nothing harmful to the child about non-nutritive sucking, AFAIK. If you are intending to sleep train in the future, then you can pretty much let your kid form any sleep association they want to...

teachers feeding kids too much junk

@binfoco As far as the school soap goes - I worked in public schools for years, and that pink shit absolutely wrecks my hands. I’d have nice hands all summer, then come in for the first day of preplanning, and my cuticles would be shredded by lunchtime after washing my hands maybe 5 times. I had...

favorite soaps that don’t dry out skin?!

@guidance I don’t have eczema, just dry skin, but I’ve had good luck with Exederm body wash. I used it during both my pregnancies. It worked especially well for me in hard water. It’s not fully granola, but it’s fragrance free, dye free, sulfate free, etc.

US Home Birth: Join me on a casual meta analysis and personal case study

@ajay004 I can look, but her conclusions are usually just to tell the reader “weigh the risks and decide what you are comfortable with.” Which I think is what you’re trying to do, right? Here’s her summary from the end of the chapter. Excerpt From Expecting Better Emily Oster...

Looking for new laundry detergent for sensitive skin and allergies?

@ang3ls I was also a humanities major, lol. But yeah… you definitely need a detergent to remove soil from your laundry. Detergent grabs the soil and helps it stick to the water, so you can rinse it all away, leaving your laundry clean. Vinegar is just a very weak, diluted acid; it may help...

favorite soaps that don’t dry out skin?!

@guidance I like Dr. Bronner’s unscented sugar soap! It’s their most dilute product, and has oils in it to moisturize. It’s the only body wash we’ve tried so far that doesn’t dry out my oldest kid’s eczema (it does trigger the younger kid’s eczema, though, so YMMV). For my youngest, I use...

US Home Birth: Join me on a casual meta analysis and personal case study

@ajay004 This is the reference list for the homebirth chapter in Emily Oster’s book Expecting Better. Thought some of these might help you, although the book is getting a little old now, so there are probably newer studies. J. R. Wax et al., “Maternal and Newborn Outcomes in Planned Home Birth...

Looking for new laundry detergent for sensitive skin and allergies?

@ang3ls Wait, you wash your laundry without detergent? Don’t the vinegar and baking soda cancel each other out?

The new Philips avent nipples are terrible

@melody5697 I saw they had been replaced at retailers, but it seemed like you could still order the old kind off Phillips’ website. Has anyone tried that? It’s not going to be an issue for me for months, since my next baby isn’t due till summer, but I’ll be pissed if I can’t get them at all.

Any articles on car seat time limit safety? Husband wants to take 6 m y/o on 25 hour trrip

@umaid I’ve always been told to stop every 2 hours and get baby out, just like you said… but apparently adults are supposed to do that for safety, too, to get out and stretch their legs every 2 hours. I’ll look for info on it. I want to say it’s related to blood clots, but IDK for sure. At the...

Looking for reassurance. Can anyone explain why a 40 pound 4-year-old can get the same covid vaccine as a 15 pound 6-month-old?

@aussiewife I’m 120 lb, my husband is 230 lb, and we have gotten all the same exact COVID vaccines… and also haven’t gotten COVID (knock on wood). It’s the same with other vaccines we’ve both had to get at the same time - flu shots, Tdap… the vaccine dosage isn’t dependent on our weight or size.

Looking for alternatives to the children's dance industrial complex

@apor2017 I have no real experience, but I like the idea of having a local teenager or college student who dances act as a one-on-one ballet tutor for your child. If you happen to be near a local college or university that has a dance program, maybe reach out to them and ask for recommendations...

    pack n play safe sleep?

@crossbearer007 In the US, a PNP (called a playard in the manual) is a safe sleep space. They can’t legally be sold here as a “playard” unless they’ve been designed to conform to safe sleep standards and passed all the sleep safety tests. This shows the table of contents for all the...
