Nurse suggested diluting formula as measure against constipation in 7-week old - is this as bad of an idea as I think?

@caowen Thanks. I do understand that and also realize that unfortunately many us adults can't read very well. I recall hearing the average reading level is around 8th grade, I think. But it is frustrating for parents and adult patients to be given an absolute like this and perhaps not even...

Nurse suggested diluting formula as measure against constipation in 7-week old - is this as bad of an idea as I think?

@greenie123 I don't know what happened with my formatting above! This is unfortunately another example of a type of fear mongering from medical professionals and the government. I see it often, where instead of proper guidance and education on reasonable things, parents are told to not do it...

Nurse suggested diluting formula as measure against constipation in 7-week old - is this as bad of an idea as I think?

@greenie123 It depends how much she was talking about. An extra ounce in each bottle is too much. 5-10 ml in a 4 oz bottle is negligible. So I would hope the nurse gave specific amounts and cautioned the mother on the risks of giving more than instructed.

    HepB Vaccine for Newborn

@kew Soy is usually worse for constipation, actually. A hydrolyzed formula is often better for constipated babies.

    HepB Vaccine for Newborn

@sarebear1992 You're totally right. I don't disagree with you or your reasoning. I was just being pedantic. Sorry.

    HepB Vaccine for Newborn

@sarebear1992 Apparently it depends who you ask. I'm a nicu nurse and we use more precise categories for gestational ages in my area: "These sub-categories are: early term (37 0/7 weeks of gestation through 38 6/7 weeks gestation); full term (39 0/7 weeks of gestation through 40 6/7 weeks of...

    HepB Vaccine for Newborn

@sarebear1992 37+1 is early term. OP did say "before term", not that baby is preterm. I'm not disagreeing with the other things you mentioned - just wanted to clarify what she said.
