My daughter failed 9th grade and I do not know what to do about it

@farmerdex Kids are frustrating. I’d probably opt for summer school if she is willing to put in some effort. One of my kids struggles with school and is a “just getting by” kid, needs me to remind to submit assignments, etc. I do so, because I hope one day they find something that interests...

My daughter failed 9th grade and I do not know what to do about it

@farmerdex I have a child that sounds similar - picky eater, doing things on their terms and timelines. But it’s still could be a skill deficit. Some of the issues you mention above, could also be sensory issues. Things like problem solving, time management, organization, flexibility...

My daughter failed 9th grade and I do not know what to do about it

@farmerdex Psycho-educational assessment. Kids usually do well, when they can. Determining the underlying issue, helps to find solutions. Kids want to please. You say she is stubborn. Determine why. Is it a defense mechanism, from not feeling adequate? You say she has always struggled in...

I got Taylor Swift tickets for me and my 14 y.o. daughter and she doesn’t want me to go

@caterpillar5 That’s a tough one. If you bought tickets, because you wanted to see the concert also - I’d just tell her that. And ask her if she still wants to go with you? Or if she’d rather give her ticket away.

    14 yo son called me a b***h

@julia13 I think so. Disengaging sends the message you won’t listen to abusive words. Gives the opportunity for both parties to evaluate their approach and have a do over if needed. If it’s a pattern of behaviour, might be time to rethink approach and see if something else might be going on.

    14 yo son called me a b***h

@abovethewaves My son and I had a disagreement yesterday. He has been falling behind in school work, making excuses, not telling the truth. I called him on the ever changing story. He ended up angry, saying “Fuck You” I absolutely don’t think swearing at your parent is an appropriate response...

@jermcoles I think this situation can quite easily be handled without making anyone feel bad about asking…

Is our daughter (11F) eating enough?

@eae45 At 11, I wouldn’t be serving her portions. Let her choose how much she takes. If she is at a healthy weight, I’d try not to stress. Just continue stocking your house with healthy options and fewer junky treats. And/ or you could talk about it from a nutritional stand point & the...

I am at my wits end with my daughter’s (16f) sleep schedule. Any advice, kind words and virtual hugs accepted

@k3at I would talk to Doctor about a temp sleep aid to reset her clock, implement a routine, screens turned in at X time. And if you feel she needs meds for anxiety still, I would suggest together talking to her psychiatrist about trying a different med. Maybe Zoloft wasn’t the right fit &...

    Teen quit school- now what?

@chunhe889 No, not all trades in Canada require a diploma. Different trades may have different pre-requisites. Welding for example in Alberta is Grade 10 Math, English & Science. Other programs like a heavy equipment technician need Grade 11 Math & English, Grade 10 science.

Teenage Son (16) abusing the sober ride home

@giobob I’m from Canada, so I don’t know what the terms are in the States to search. But I’d be surprised if there was absolutely no options available. I have a sibling who struggled with underlying mental health issues, that contributed to hard core drug addictions. They did get their life...

Teenage Son (16) abusing the sober ride home

@giobob I’m not from Colorado, but I’d do more research on involuntary commitment/ treatment. I would seek professional guidance for yourself on how to create boundaries regarding your child’s behaviour also. https://bha.colorado.gov/resources/substance-use-commitment
