Is having a second kid really worth all the trouble? It looks exponentially harder to go from 1 to 2 kids than zero to 1.

@christopherpriestley I mean for my family its not worth the trouble and that’s why we’re one and done. Everyone’s different though.

    How do people afford kids????

@mercifulwoman Whether or not to stay home or work is a personal decision, and it doesn’t hang on dollar amount alone. I would map out the scenarios and also consider what you value. If you can find a part time job and that’s what you’d prefer to do for a couple years over starting a new career...

    How do people afford kids????

@mercifulwoman If the $180k is household income then your debts are also household debt. There are also tools like you need a budget (YNAB) that’s supposed to help with planning too; my friend uses that one and loves it!

    How do people afford kids????

@mercifulwoman I think you need to sit down and get perspective on your cash flow. You said you don’t have debt but you do have debt - $1k month on loans at least, not counting anything you’re putting on your credit cards or spending for the fixer upper. I imagine there are also costs for...

Doctors' Appointments to Budget for Health Insurance

@sisi Yeah I think it just depends on what’s covered by your plan and what the hospital charges (not sure if that applies to you or not though, if you gave birth at the same hospital). Birth costs vary so wildly by region or even hospital to hospital. The Kaiser cost calculator estimates my...

Anxiety over planning for baby number 2+?

@chantelle24 Oh totally, all issues can point back to lack of support for parents and especially mothers. I’m sure moms who may choose or are forced to leave the workforce to be SAHPs also would prefer to have kids closer together so they can get back to work. My husband has a cousin in London...

Doctors' Appointments to Budget for Health Insurance

@state26 Your company should be sharing the “summary of benefits and coverage” for each of their plan options. Looking at mine (Kaiser CalPERS HMO) they break down pregnancy charges into: office visits, childbirth/delivery professional services, and childbirth/delivery facility services. That...

Anxiety over planning for baby number 2+?

@cls0583 I don’t have baby #1 yet, but I think your concerns are very valid. I honestly don’t know when “2 under 2” became more of the norm, especially when at the same time modern parents seem to get less and less support. Why do we insist on doing things in hard mode?! I think we will be...

    washing non-organic produce

@nolongerchaff My husband handles this but mainly it’s vinegar and water. The vinegar surprisingly does not linger! We just let it soak, rinse out, lay to dry on a towel for a bit before putting away.

Has anyone else already written their birth plan?

@pariaman Definitely have already started thinking about it, though mine is not as in depth as yours! My ultimate goal for birth is whatever safely gets me and baby home and reduces the healing time. I live in a pretty progressive area where hospitals practice baby-centered care (nurse...

Daydreaming about names… my top 5 C names

@ivyt85 Agree! I also heard of a Clea recently and like that a lot too.

    washing non-organic produce

@nolongerchaff We always wash berries with vinegar solution, organic and non-organic alike. The amount of dirt you get out of it is incredibly disturbing lol.

Turning 30, thinking about quitting law school after my first semester to start a family. Advice?

@ladyghosthunter My answer is a little twofold here. The TL;DR is yes, I think you should have an identity outside of being a mom, but that doesn’t mean you have to go to law school unless you actually want to be a lawyer, because that is too much debt to take “just in case.” Longer version: I...

Daydreaming about names… my top 5 C names

@curiousaboutthis I love the nick name Charlie! But there’s already a Charlotte in the family and my friend’s kid is named Charlee lol. I figure there are enough C names out there we can pick something else

    Took L.O. to the E.R

@xeonome I’ve cut my finger as well and it’s super scary looking. Lots of nerve endings so the blood is insane. Fingers are just dramatic. Glad everything is ok!

Turning 30, thinking about quitting law school after my first semester to start a family. Advice?

@erik1611 *any female attorney. I’m sure many men do, but they don’t think about being stay at home fathers.

Daydreaming about names… my top 5 C names

Another post daydreaming about potential baby names. My husband’s family has a tradition where the first born has a C name and my husband once had a dream that we had a baby girl, so I’ve been contemplating names! I prefer more unique names and my husband leans more classic so it’ll be...

Turning 30, thinking about quitting law school after my first semester to start a family. Advice?

@1astrokid1 Assuming it’s a top tier school, a starting salary for law grads can be upwards of $300k. She could pay it back quickly, but that may mean putting off TTC for a little longer.

Turning 30, thinking about quitting law school after my first semester to start a family. Advice?

@ladyghosthunter Ok then I’m assuming you’re thinking about law school to get back into politics? That is reasonable, but again don’t think that’s worth $250k and especially not if you might just want to stay home for a while. You can do a MA in Public Policy for less and get to your same end...

    Worried about setbacks

@chrisjohnstonone Totally understand your disappointment, especially so close to the finish line! I think if you feel that you all could still do this even with his layoff, I would broach the subject. Though I do understand if he was stressed about TTC with such uncertain financial outcomes. Not...
