Raising trilingual kid. Questions about which languages should I display to her during TV time

@cookthomas My 3 y.o. son watches TV in French or Japanese interchangeably and he never was confused, even if it was the same cartoon with the other language. It will sometimes be English as well and he likes it slightly less because now he actually understands what he watches in Fr/Jp, and not...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@kajiki Thank you for the comment. I think we do insist a bit on the minority language so far. But yes, I've mostly been focusing on "fun" exposure for both languages (books, games, movies, etc.).

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@celestialpearl Thank you for your comment and advice :) It is true that my son seems to make the same mistake in French that my wife does. So far my take has been that native kids do some mistakes as well (different ones) and will learn the 'proper' grammar in school. But thank you for the...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@chauncywilltheologian Good point about OPOL sometimes just not being possible. Sorry for not being more inclusive. I guess I was egotistically talking about my own situation only. As you stated as well, Covid makes things a bit more difficult these days with the inside/outside distinction...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@jonyjam_123 It does sound like we're in a similar position indeed, thank you for your input :) I like your idea of 2P2L, this is exactly what I wa talking about! As for your last paragraph, this is actually one of the things that makes it difficult for me to pick a "method": we don't...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@victorgrant I am one of these people as well (verbose, not linguistic career) and I try very hard online to limit my sentences heh. I feel ya. But for today, I was the one asking and you were generous with your time and words, sodon't apologize - thank you again, have a good day :)

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@victorgrant Thank you for your long and detailled answer and input, much appreciated :) We do try to insist a little bit more on the minority language at the moment, but we are not 100% sure where we are gonna live in the long run, so it isn't crystal clear which of the two languages is the...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@amelia97 Thank you for your input, these are great points. I wanted to say regarding importance, one thing that I remember from my father is the lack of importance he put on German. As a child maybe I thought, if my father doesn't speak it, maybe I don't need to speak it either. Now as a...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@katrina2017 Thank you for your input. Roger that. We do indeed sometimes take the easy path and mix up the two languages mid-sentence for convenience's sake... I feel the pandemic and the lack of outside contact has just made it worse in the past few months u_u I'll try to be more careful.

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@dramatic444 Thank you very much for your input! this feels like what we believe as well. We are trying to show our children that we both have a respect and appreciation for the other's culture and language, so that our children will also want to learn both. And we do insist a little bit on the...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@isoter Thank you for your input as well. This seems to be what we are going for as well :)

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

@clwill4867 Thank you very much for your answer and input. My son doesn't go to school yet so we will see what added challenge this will bring to the table! But it is reassuring to know that our non-method can maybe work. We try to make exposure as fun as possible in both languages, and to...

Is OPOL the best method, or just the only one possible most of the time?

Hello, I have been following this sub for a while a I have a question I want to ask; is almost everyone doing & defending OPOL because it is the best method, or because it is effectively the best method that they can do personnally? I have been raised by a French/German couple that spoke to...
