Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@alt124 Do you personally do any carpools? I haven’t had this conversation before. 6 and 8 seem so young to go with anybody we don’t know very well personally. I always see at least one parent/family member per kid per game. I am noticing that birthday parties suddenly became drop off only for...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@brandon0820 Oofta, that’s a lot to juggle. Especially with 2 working parents and 3+ kids. I mean more power to you and no disrespect. I’d love all A’s, but at 6 and 8 we just focus on redoing/working through what they get wrong and doing their best. It’s definitely a whole family lifestyle...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@darren927 See I’m fine with adapting to some extent. But where do you draw the line? Of course I want to give the kids everything they want and hope for. But there are financial, time, and sanity restrictions. Plus what the kid wants vs how it impacts them can be totally disconnected. What I...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@kalter That sounds so nice to me! We’ve never done after school activities. Even rec was driving each kid somewhere 2x/week. I say was because for the first time since November we are soccer free. I’m signing them up for a once/week self defense course 5 minutes from the house soon. But this...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@teresabeloved I really like summer sports since we don’t have the school shuffle. 2x a week summer rec each is perfect. Thanks for reinforcing that. I hope we can be those parents who have time for all of that, but right now we’d definitely not!

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@cubikman I’ve thought about this! Do any of these kids live in the country? Because I’m a drama queen about 30 minutes drive each way. What if it was 40 minutes!? Plenty of those kids still lead healthy, vibrant lives. 4H, four wheelers, snowmobiles, fishing, hunting, etc. I want a balance of...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@joanfiz Absolutely! When he’s laid off he does 100% of this. And I don’t attend every game. I probably should have that talk with the kids. I’d love to see your practice every time, but we need clean underwear and dishes.

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@joanfiz Unfortunately we don’t consistently have the ability to rotate parents. SO works construction which could mean no work for 2-3 months, then 6 10’s plus a commute like he’s doing now. When we do revisit I’ll absolutely look for carpool opportunities. Right now even if we had that...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@jester5510 I would love to get the kids into music lessons! I recently started teaching them guitar off of YouTube, but I’d like to get them into something formal. Variety would be really interesting to see. Both kids are very athletic and competitive. I bet they’d enjoy so many different...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@katrina2017 Oh dad totally did. I let him sit in that one for awhile. I was extremely reluctant. I must be clairvoyant. Instead of a ton of back and forth I said fine, if YOU will be doing the practices and default for the games. He did carry the brunt of it for the first 4 months. Then...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@versaowner They love the competition, hate the schedule. I really think I settled on I’m not able to do this right now and be the parent I want to be. Maybe the tides will shift later on. But it’s turning into a can’t. Other important areas are suffering despite us giving this our all.

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@minmikrub This is so thoughtfully phrases! I absolutely have no desire to force him to stay young and lock him up forever. I am SO glad he’s developing hobbies, interests, and friends. There’s a little ping of “omg, it’s happening!” But I have no desire to force him to spend time with us as a...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@lugiboss I really wonder how much extra he’s really getting out of it. Even if all of our stress and money was set aside. Plus with a second kid it’s implied that she would ALSO be able to participate at this level. I know a lot of parents find a community/social life through sports and...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@nrg23 Every family is different, I guess that’s what I was trying to get at when I said I’m not trying to be judgmental. I’m not trying to imply that competitive/ elite sports families neglect their children! I just don’t have the resources in time, money, or mental bandwidth to balance it all...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@kdr95 This is a growing fear of mine. That would be WWIII in our house and likely lasting resentment. She deserves her own life and just as much investment as her brother. Whether that’s soccer, art, basketweaving, punk metal, whatever it is. I want to spread attention and energy as equally as...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@sojchd This is a really balanced approach! What a unique perspective. You know, I’m willing to sacrifice everything I have for my kids. But I don’t necessarily have the resources to make EVERYTHING the kids might want possible. Priorities have to be chosen. There’s limited time, money, and...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@warmtribute See, I just don’t prioritize them becoming an elite athlete young. I don’t think it’s hampering their opportunities or dreams. He’s 8. There are so many future opportunities and goals to be had. Spending 4+ nights/week for half the year means less of a lot of things. Fewer family...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@righty I totally remember all of the same antics 😂 sometimes I wait to wash dishes until they’re in bed since I’m in earshot. They eventually get so bored of waiting for me to go away so they can mess around that they sleep.

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@righty Right!?!? That part drives me up the wall. Especially when the activity starts at 7, but it’s a 30 minute drive with traffic/construction. So we’re leaving at 6:20. Getting home at 8:30. Then they have to shower, brush teeth, etc. And without fail procrastinate bedtime because they need...

Do you all accommodate any kids activity/sport you can? Or do you draw a line even if you COULD make it happen?

@noelie Oh man, I hope you can find a balance. You have plenty of time! I would be so stoked if track was the thing that stuck. They’re both incredible runners. It offers variety. In my area it doesn’t start until middle school, and the bus takes them to/from tournaments. I’d be just as happy...
